Melbourne's laneways are packed with art and it comes in all forms including spray paint graffiti, stencil graffiti, wheatpasted poster art, sticker art, street installations, and sculpture, good, bad, ugly and sometimes inspired!
But there's one form commonly called tagging and it's ruining so much of the legitimate street art, taggers say like to say it's their mode of expression which implies a level of legitimacy, expression it may be but art it ain't. I've been taking photographers down Melbourne's labyrinth of laneways for the past three years and over that time I've seen a slow but steady increase in the amount of tagging going on, or more to the point scribble defacing the many art works, these guys are piggy backing on someone else's talent pure and simple. Their primary motivation is to simply out do each other, to see who can get their little scribble in the most places, they seem blind to the fact that they are ruining so much of what makes the lanes interesting and vibrant. Give it rest guys. Melbourne laneway photography Tours
